Sam now began to question Smirnov\u2019s results during the meetings with the GM; however, the GM didn\u2019t want to listen to anything Sam had to say.\u00a0 Instead the GM began to issue an unusual command.\u00a0 Sam was to go into the lab and make data.\u00a0 In fact, the GM didn\u2019t care if Sam made a single actual physical sample.\u00a0 \u201cGive me data\u201d is what the GM said, \u201cI don\u2019t care about samples.\u201d\u00a0 Sam now knew for certain everything was being made up.\u00a0 If Smirnov said anything at all the GM would make unusual statements.\u00a0 One such statement was \u201cYou know Smirnov, Stalin wasn\u2019t a bad guy, he did many good things.\u201d\u00a0 To which Smirnov replied, \u201cGM you should not say these things.\u201d\u00a0 When Sam told me this I thought to myself, gee I wonder what some of the people who worked for the GM that had previously suffered under the red tide would have to say about that?\u00a0 Most likely they would be like the other members of the herd, cowards.\u00a0 Ok, another digression on my part (back to Sam\u2019s story).\u00a0 According to Sam many of the other students in the herd also knew things were being falsified but not a single one would stand up for Sam.\u00a0 Later Sam told me how one student (Mr. Gandhi) told Sam that Dr. Smirnov and Ms. Knowitall (another American student) had managed to do all of the experiments for her Ph.D. degree within a very short (ca. 1-2 weeks) period of time.\u00a0 The hint, hint, wink, wink, nudge, nudge of rampant fabrication was there.<\/p>\n
Finally when Sam demanded Smirnov provide physical samples only 4-5 were provided (out of > 50 possible runs) and Sam was not overly surprised to find (on 1<\/sup>H NMR and GPC analyses) that they weren\u2019t even close to being what they were supposed to be.\u00a0 Sam showed the results to the GM.\u00a0 The GM asked Sam if he wanted to still work for him.\u00a0 Sam replied \u201cIf it means making up data then no.\u201d\u00a0 The GM then did something unexpected.\u00a0 He called in his new secretary (Mrs. UK) and then went on to say, \u201cTake down all I say.\u00a0 Sam had failed to fulfill his obligations.\u201d\u00a0 Then before the GM could utter another word Sam stated that he didn\u2019t have to listen to another word and he was going to get an attorney and then he walked out.\u00a0 The next day the GM left the US to Europe.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" Sam now began to question Smirnov\u2019s results during the meetings with the GM; however, the GM didn\u2019t want to listen to anything Sam had to say.\u00a0 Instead the GM began to issue an unusual command.\u00a0 Sam was to go into … Continue reading
